A Safely Built Electric Vehicle will have:
1. All High Voltage Identified and Insulated
a. All high voltage will be identified with orange wire
b. All exposed terminations insulated to the ‘touch safe’ standard
2. All EV Equipment Securely Fastened
a. All batteries securely fastened against shifting during an accident - preferably to the vehicle frame.
b. All controls securely tied to the vehicle.
3. A well Labeled Kill Switch
a. A well labeled kill switch should disable the electric drive in the event of an electrical or mechanical failure.
b. The kill switch should be readily accessible to the driver from the driver’s seat.
4. Battery Weight Evenly Distributed
a. Battery weight distributed throughout the vehicle to match the original donor vehicle weight distribution including axial weight distribution.
5. EV Components Mounted out of the Crash Zone
a. All EV components (batteries, motor, drive, controls etc) mounted so that in a front or rear collision the components are not pushed into the passenger compartment.
b. Shields and mountings should be designed to divert components away from the passenger compartment.
6. All Safety Features Operational
a. All donor vehicle original safety features reinstalled.
b. OEM bracing, passenger restraint systems intact and operational.
7. A Fail Safe Design
a. All electrical and mechanical devices should be designed to fail to a ‘safe’ mode in the event of a mechanical or electrical failure.
b. The drive fails to a freewheeling mode instead of a runaway state.
